Indiana Beta Sigma Phi
State Council

State Council - where we started...

Welcome to the inaugural launch of the Indiana Beta Sigma Phi Web site.  We are very excited about the site and hope to hear from lots of Betas out there on what you like, don't like and additional information you would like to see.

I'd like to give you a brief history of the Indiana State Council of Beta Sigma Phi.  The Indiana State Council was formed to bring chapters together from across the state to share and enjoy the sisterhood of Beta Sigma Phi; to provide a foundation for growth, an opportunity to learn from each other and a stage to have fun.  Any and all
Indiana chapters are eligible for membership in the State Council by paying their state dues.  The first state function was State Convention.

We elected our first State Officers in 1937 with Louisa Fitzgerald of
Terre Haute serving as our first President.  In 1939 the first State Council Day was held.  In 1940 we held our first State Fun Day.  In 1941 the first State Project was established, a fund for the purchase of subscriptions to the Readers Digest to be distributed to our Armed Forces.  In 1946 it was decided to not have state officers and try a Hostess City Plan for state meetings.  In 1948 at the State Fun Day in Vincennes it was decided the Hostess City Plan was not working and the membership voted to return to state officers.  We have had state officers ever since.  Our first Bowling tournament was held in 1963 in Lafayette.

As times changed, our State Project changed and we now have the opportunity to vote on the State Project every four years.  We currently support the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence as our State Project.  In 1977 a Secondary State Project was established, the Indiana Lamplighter Memorial Fund.  It was established in memory of an
Evansville sister and its purpose is to help sisters in need.  Any member in good standing is eligible and the money is given as a gift, not a loan.

Our State Council has grown over the years but the ideals it was started with still remain:  to bring chapters and sisters together from across the state to share in the Gifts of Sisterhood.
